Devil comet:

Astronomers have revealed that a comet three times the size of Mount Everest, dubbed ‘Devil Comet’, complete with horns, is approaching Earth. Named 12P/Pons-Brooks, the massive space rock is visible to the naked eye.

Most recently, between Oct. 5 and Oct. 7, the Pons-Brooks, or “Devil Comet,” erupted, providing astronomers with additional footage showing two horns erupting from the comet, according to the New York Post.

The Devil comet is called cryovolcanic, meaning it is a cold volcano. It is about 30 km wide. Some experts have joked that its strange shape makes it look like a spaceship from a science fiction story, like the Millennium Falcon from ‘Star Wars’. But, what exactly is a crevovolcano?

A cryovolcano is a type of volcano that spews things like water, ammonia or methane into an extremely cold atmosphere, even colder than freezing temperatures.

Don’t worry about a major collision with Devil Comet 12P just yet. Scientists say it won’t get really close to Earth until 2024, when we’ll be able to see it without telescopes. After that, it will return to space and not approach us again until 2095.

According to Space Weather, all comets, including devil comet 12P, have a hard core composed of a mixture of gas dust and ice. The fact that 12P contains a large amount of ice and gas within its core distinguishes it from other comets.

  • Coma: As nucleus heats up, causing the nucleus to eject gas and dust. A glowing, dim area around the nucleus called the coma. Coma can be larger than most planets.
  • Tails: Perhaps the most prominent feature of comets is their tails, which point away from the Sun. The tail forms when the solar wind and radiation pressure push gas and dust away from the coma, creating a long, bright trail.

Orbital Dance of Comets:-

Devil Comets follow long, elliptical orbits around the Sun, which can take them on long journeys through the Solar System. Some comets are “short-period,” meaning their orbits last only a few years and are part of the capricorn belt or scattered disk, the region beyond Neptune. Others are “long-period” comets, which can take hundreds or even thousands of years to complete an orbit, originating in the Oort Cloud, a vast collection of icy bodies at the edge of the Solar System.
